The best way to describe Calvin’s entry into the music world is to simply say that it was a “destiny he could not escape”.  Born into a very rich musical heritage, where musicians extended for generations on both sides of his family, encompassing Jazz, Classical and Funk/Soul, some say it was his destiny. Calvin does not consider himself to be a prodigy and aspires to the philosophy of one of his mentors who believes that, “Hard work will always outshine talent in the long run.” He believes that musical expressions are never conclusive but can be extended through creative persistence and hard work; and that hard work can bring you far beyond the limits of your innate talents.
Calvin has performed, recorded, and toured over 3 continents with artists such as; Irvin Mayfield and the New Orleans Jazz Orchestra, Aaron Neville, Fred Wesley, Ellis Marsalis, Big Sam’s Funky Nation, Bob French, Royal Players Brass Band, and New Birth Brass band to name a few. He has performed in such venues as; Jazz at Lincoln Center, Kodak Theatre, and all those in-between. He has been a frequent performer at the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage festival,

French Quarter festival, Voodoo Music festival and the local music scene of New Orleans. In addition to his performances, Calvin has enjoyed the privilege of giving back to the community by being a Jazz Foundation of America Clinician, where he leads workshops in the public schools of New Orleans.
Always seeking to obtain further insight and expand his knowledge, Calvin’s curiosity has led him into the managerial aspect of the music industry, which led to many internships. These experiences motivated him to create, incorporate and administer the JOMAJO Performing Arts Company, a non-profit based in New Orleans dedicated to the presentation of the performing arts. At just only 23 years old Calvin has reached a point in his professional development where a solo career has become inevitable. The Calvin Johnson Quartet (CJQ) has materialized and is on the move.
